Netflix is keen on reopening the door to a case that’s been abandoned for many years despite no justice being achieved.
While the story of JonBenét Ramsey’s brutal 1996 murder made the rounds in the media at the time, the police’s missteps unwittingly meant that the real murderer got away with the crime.
Coming from Academy Award–nominated director Joe Berlinger, the Netflix show will shed light on how the Boulder Police’s inexperience in handling homicide investigations meant that JonBenét didn’t get her justice.
Netflix – Teases New Real Crime Docuseries: ‘Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?’
On Dec. 26, 1996, John and Patsy woke up to a home that will forever be broken. Their little girl was missing and they’d discovered a ransom note.
As if this isn’t enough shock for one family, they discover the body of their 6-year-old daughter in the basement. The body was brutally sexually assaulted before being murdered, all in the safety of her parents’ house.
Naturally, the police were more keen to suspect the residents of the house than those who were outside, leading the Ramsey family to be the prime suspects and the punching bag of the media at the time.
When all this was going on, the real murderer was out there, and the clues were slowly disintegrating. 28 years later and Netflix wants to sink their teeth into the problematic case, and perhaps uncover some clues that were previously missed.
Netflix writes: “The series scrutinizes the missteps of law enforcement and the media, highlighting the relatively straightforward measures that could potentially solve this haunting mystery. As the series unfolds, it poses a critical question: Will Colorado authorities finally take the necessary actions to bring JonBenét Ramsey’s killer to justice and offer her family the peace they’ve long sought?”
‘Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?’ is produced by Joe Berlinger, Craig D’Entrone, Jon Kamen, Jen Isaacson, and Tim Young. The series will premiere this Nov. 2025 on Netflix.
