Squid Game 2′ breakout star Park Sung-hoon has exited the forthcoming tvN K-drama, ‘The Tyrant Chef,’ after finding himself in the center of a fierce backlash for posting pornographic content online.
He has since apologized for his actions and explained that the post was simply an unplanned mistake.
Squid Games – What Park Sung-hoon’s Controversy Is All About
‘Squid Game’s’ second season was an instant hit, drawing 126.2 million views in its first 11 days. The massive interest in the show led fans to create a number of content from its material, ranging from the comical to the weird and the straight-up dark.
One of these ‘Squid Game’-inspired content was actually the thing that recently damned Park Sung-hoon. You see, he shared a sexually explicit graphic parodying ‘Squid Game’ on his personal account.
The post happened to coincide with the cancellation of ‘The Tyrant’s Chef’s’ first script reading, but per a report by The Daily Tribune, the cancellation had nothing to do with the controversy or the ensuing backlash. It was done in tribute to victims of the Jeju Air plane crash that left nearly 180 people dead in December.
Squid Games – What Park Sung-hoon Has Said About His Explicit Post
Following the backlash, Sung-hoon directly apologized for his actions, pleading that it was nothing but a silly mistake. “I found a problematic photo in my [direct messages] as I was rushing to go out around lunchtime to go to my schedule,” he told Korea Economic Daily, via Koreaboo. “While exchanging the show’s reactions with the organizer, I think I accidentally posted it to my story while sending it.”
“I, of course, did not watch the video,” he added. “I also do not have another account, so it wasn’t a mistake to try to upload it to a different account. I felt a lot of regret and blamed myself for the inconvenience my mistake had caused. I will carry on with my acting career with a heavy heart, being mindful of my words and actions so something like this will not happen again.”
Park Sung-hoon is known for portraying Cho Hyun-ju/Player 120, a transgender woman who signed up for the games to afford her next surgery transition.
Following his success in ‘Squid Game,’ Park was set to next appear in ‘The Tyrant’s Chef,’ alongside K-pop star Yoona. His replacement is yet to be announced.
