Licorice Pizza The Movie Cameo Written For Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dad George?

Licorice Pizza The Movie Leonardo DiCaprio Dad George

Licorice Pizza is a movie that features a cameo in which Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dad George featured. It seems an odd movie for him to appear in. But, it seems that Paul Thomas Anderson actually had George in mind when he produced at least part of it. During his career, the 78-year-old was a producer and actor. He was probably best known for Legacy of Secrecy, Greensburg (2008), and Island. Additionally,  he is a comic book artist and distributor.

Licorice Pizza Features George DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is much better known than his dad these days. In fact, he’s been known to hang with the Royal Family. Earlier in November, Prince Charles and DiCaprio who met in 1997 at the London premiere of the Titanic, partnered together. They released a joint statement, “calling for an immediate suspension on oil and gas drilling in Africa’s Okavango River Basin.” Well, seeing they both zip around in fast jets, some folks thought it was rather hypocritical. Still, Leonardo’s popularity remains as he’s such a good actor with many awards to his credit.

The eccentric actor, George features in Licorice Pizza as a hippie who owns a waterbed store. While he encouraged his son’s creative talent, he never really took off in the movie industry himself. Well, now he’s in a new movie, fans wonder how he landed the part. And it seems that it’s all about who you know. According to New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan, Anderson wrote the cameo with someone in mind. He couldn’t put his finger in who that was, until later. He spoke about it on Twitter.

On Twitter, the journalist explained that Anderson spoke about how and why he cast George. He shared an excerpt that read, “I created a picture of a guy who owned a wig shop that sold these waterbeds, and I couldn’t put my finger on it. I kept saying, ‘Who do I know who looks like this?'” Well, in a sudden flash of inspiration, he recalled that the person he wrote about looked “exactly like this.” Later, he spoke with George and offered him the part and he agreed to take it on.  Apparently, once upon a time, he owned a water bed company named Foggy Bottom.

Licorice Pizza was released in limited theaters and the main release is due on Christmas Day this month. In a review of the movie, IGN reported that it’s a70s based love story between a girl and a boy. But, they also noted that “at the heart of this film between 15-year-old Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) and 25-year-old Alana Kane (Alana Haim) isn’t cute, sweet, or charming. It’s one, wrong and two, extremely dysfunctional for this pair living in the Hollywood-adjacent San Fernando Valley.”

The Cameo Scene

The Licorice Pizza review by IGN didn’t talk about Georgie DiCaprio. He’s not the main star and only features in a cameo. Actually, it looks like he enjoyed the fun side of the production. You can watch the trailer for the movie below:
