I won’t even attempt to downplay the level of unprecedented move that just went down. For the first time in three decades, Washington Post will be heading towards the election day on neutral ground.
Some are saying Elon Musk is inciting his fellow billionaires to walk away from the established norm of supporting Democrats.
Some are saying it’s much deeper than that. Others are frankly reading a lot into Kamala Harris’ proposed tax plans. So with all that’s going on right now, what’s right and what’s not right?
Washington Post Claims They’re Merely Returning To Their Roots By Not Endorsing A Presidential Candidate
Beyoncé is currently drumming up support for Kamala Harris, but you know who won’t be? Washington Post, that’s who. And it’s not for lack of trying.
According to the Columbia Journalism Review, the Post’s editorial board had already drafted an endorsement copy of Harris with support from editorial page editor David Shiple before Lewis shut it down, prompting widespread shock within the publication. In light of this, Robert Kagan, Washington Post’s editor-at-large resigned from the paper.
Insiders claim that the decision to kill the endorsement ultimately came from Bezos, making him the second billionaire to stop a major publication from endorsing a candidate in just a matter of days. This decision was termed “cowardice” by executive editor Martin Baron.
According to the Post, not only are they breaking a tradition that’s been done for 36 years, but they’ll be keeping to it moving forward.
This did not sit well with several employees, who protested by co-signing an article condemning the decision. Angry readers also flooded the email inboxes of several staffers demanding answers.
Jeff Bezos Joins Patrick Soon-Shiong In Killing A Kamala Harris Endorsement
Even though Bezos’ kill order seems to provoke the most response and coverage, he is by no means the only billionaire who has stilled a paper’s hand from making a political endorsement in recent years.
Billionaire Soon-Shiong blocked the Los Angeles Times from publicly endorsing Kamala Harris, leading editorials editor Mariel Garza to resign from her post.
Soon-Shiong claimed that the reason for it was that the paper failed to provide a neutral analysis of both candidates.
