Is TLC’s ‘Breaking Amish’ Spinoff ‘Return To Amish’ Fake?

TLC’s popular reality show Breaking Amish premiered on the network in September 2012 and has been a gold standard for reality TV lovers. The show revolves around four Amish as well as one Mennonite adult who make a big move to NYC in an effort to experience something different in life and decide if they wish to remain outside or continue with their Amish community. However, its spinoff series, Return To Amish, is being dubbed fake by viewers. Why is it so? Keep reading to find out the details!

Return To Amish ran on TLC between 2014 and 2021, except for 2018, and aired a total of 6 seasons. The series showcased the OG cast members from Breaking Amish who chose to return to their Amish hometowns and try to re-adjust in their community. On November 2022, TLC revealed that the show was renewed for a seventh season that aired on March 14, 2023.

Following its debut in 2012, the spinoff became very popular, with an average of 3 Million views for every episode aired on Season 1. However, shortly after it aired, reports started surfacing, questioning the series’ validity. Fans even claimed that TLC crafted scenes on the show to boost its ratings. Reports also suggested that several cast members from the show had already begun their lives outside their Amish community.

However, the very same year, TLC and its production company named Hot Snakes Media, shared a joint statement debunking these claims. They revealed that their Mennonite and Amish producers introduced them to people that had already decided to leave their community and see the world with or even without TLC. But, they did allow TLC to film them on their new journey.

Previously, Jeremiah Raber, the Return To Amish star, shared how the scenes on the show weren’t 100 percent real. He revealed that the places they visit need to be set up in advance. This is done to ensure that TLC has permission to film at any required location. He also added that there are surely parts in the series that are scripted to make it interesting and juicy for viewers.

Jeremiah had previously been bashed by viewers and had reportedly left the Amish community at the age of 18. However, again, in 2012, he was seen on the show indulging in modern-day tasks and using a mobile phone. Later, he explained that there are several types of Amish communities, and some are less strict in their approach. And his is one of those less strict communities.
