If you’re looking for something different to watch this summer, check out Bravo’s new reality TV show, “Sonja & Luann: Welcome to Crappie Lake.” The show features Real Housewives Of New York City (RHONY) alums Sonja Morgan and Luann de Lesseps. But what makes it different is seeing these city slickers in their own version of Paris Hilton’s and Nicole Richie’s “The Simple Life.”
And Sonja and Luann recently explained their own views on why and how they sought to experience life in the town of Benton, Illinois. But can the RHONY alums actually help the locals revive an area hurt by the pandemic? Find out what to know below.

Bravo has taken a risk in creating an unusual spin-off for the Real Housewives of New York City (RHONY). And while RHONY alums Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan became fan favorites on the show, the decision to send them out of New York to Benton, Illinois at first baffled fans. But against all odds, the show delighted viewers with its unexpected blend of “The Simple Life” and Real Housewives.
And de Lesseps joined Morgan in telling the Insider their views on “Luann and Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake.” Because the pandemic hurt the town, the mayor asks Sonja and Luann to help revitalize it. For instance, the new reality TV show follows the women as they go to a festival, try to catch catfish with their hands, and mingle with the locals. And Morgan even finds time to canoodle with one. “I’m all about being sexually free,” said Sonja. “And everybody knows that.”
But Luann shared that both RHONY alums focused on helping the town. “The mayor tasked us with all these things to do,” she explained. “And one by one we knocked them off. We had a long, long list.” And the 58-year-old described “very long days of work. Our lives basically were gone for six weeks because we just needed all of our time and energy to spend getting this town into shape before we left. So, we got a lot done.”

And Morgan boasted, “We pulled everything off on that list, and we did it together. When Lu says she’s going to do something, she does it,” praised Sonja. “And so do I. We’ve been doing this our whole life between our charities and entertaining.”
But De Lesseps and Morgan take special pride in the town talent show called the Benton Follies. And Luann explained that although the local groups of dancers seemed talented, “they needed just that edge. So, we needed to bring in an icon,” she added. “And Paula Abdul agreed to come. We were thrilled.”
But for fans who want more of de Lesseps and Morgan, the two also star in Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Legacy. And that show will reunite them with RHONY alums Dorinda Medley, Ramona Singer, Kristen Taekman, and Kelly Killoren Bensimon. Luann shared that the women break “the fourth wall a lot by talking about things that have gone down over the years.”
