Survivor Host Jeff Probst Reveals How He Almost Left The Series

It’s hard to imagine CBS’ long running reality series Survivor airing each week without its well known host Jeff Probst.

But that was almost the case according to Probst who recently shared how he had doubts more than once in the past about sticking with the bread and butter series that has been on TV for 46 seasons.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Probst shared how he thought about leaving the show during the twelfth season of Survivor.

While the 62-year-old didn’t delve into why he considered leaving the show behind during its Panama edition, he did share that money was a factor for him when the show entered into its sixth season.

During season sixteen, Probst was making less than his scripted counterparts who weren’t pulling in the ratings that was Survivor was at the time. While it is unclear what Probst made then, it appears he makes roughly $200k an episode now.

Survivor Spoilers – A Much Needed Reset

What changed Jeff Probst’s feelings towards the competition series was a needed break due to COVID. The time away after starting the series in 2000 helped the stepfather of two take stock of what he truly wanted to do in the future.

“The Covid break was a great Survivor reset for me,” he shared with ET. “Coming on the heels of Winners at War, which I loved, I was more tired than I realized. When we had to postpone our shoot, it gave me a chance to step back and once again reflect on all the things I absolutely love about this show.”

When asked if he plans to leave anytime int he future, Probst shared that he doesn’t think he will be departing the series anytime soon.

“It’s impossible to describe what Survivor represents to me. Impossible. It goes beyond creative expression or professional recognition. It’s much deeper.”

Survivor is currently airing its 46th season on Sundays on CBS
