Reaching Out On Support

Teddi, who underwent brain surgery to remove some tumors, has bravely fought the good fight. But perhaps she feels in need of support from those people who also went through the same treatment and diagnosis. This week on Instagram, she put out an appeal on a text meme.

In her post, the text read:

If you have had -or-currently have stage 4 melanoma that has metastasized to the brain, please comment below if you know a support group or are interested in being apart (sic) of one.

Many people revealed their own struggles with cancer, or those of their loved ones. Certainly, Teddi Mellencamp is not alone when it comes to the scary disease. Were they able to help with support groups? Read on for responses.

Reactions In The Comments

There seems to be a lack of support groups, and some people said that they find more support on social media from other sufferers. However, there were some mentions about hospitals and treatment centers that seem to help with after-care and support. Here are some of the most notable replies:

  • I am part of several online support groups for melanoma, but also participate in events and webinars for the ABTA (American Brain Tumor Association) @the_abta , who are a whoooole other world of support for we metastatic brain tumor patients.
  • I am a mentor with the 4th Angel program at the Cleveland Clinic and love helping melanoma patients navigate through their journey!!
  • Facebook has several groups. In the four years since my diagnosis I have learned a lot and people are wonderfully supportive.
  • Love you, Teddy. So glad you’re reaching out to others to see what support works are available. Your voice carries…

Apart from the “Angel Program” at the Cleveland Clinic and the American Brain Tumor Association, there were not many other recommendations. But some folks find a lot of help online on Facebook.

Here are a few of them that you can check out, if, like Teddi Mellencamp, you also fight melanoma that has metastasized.

  • CancerCare: The Facebook page for the charity notes that they help people affected by cancer through free counseling, support groups, educational resources, advocacy, and financial assistance.
  • The Facebook Group, Mucosal Melanoma Warriors Foundation, is a private community for people diagnosed with Mucosal Melanoma and their primary caregiver.
  • The Melanoma Warriors also offers support. Their synopsis reads, “It is for everyone who has been touched by melanoma or skin cancer and wants to do something positive in helping eradicate it!”
  • Cancer support group for all: The group is open to all, but no self-promotion is allowed. This page provides emotional support, an opportunity to share experiences, and offers helpful resources.
