Legendary musician David Crosby has died at the age of 81. His wife, Jan Dance, told Variety that the iconic singer, songwriter and guitarist and member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, died following an extended illness. During Crosby’s illustrious career he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a member of The Byrds and as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
She stated, “It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us.”

She added, “His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

The Los Angeles native founded the influential band The Byrds in 1964 and a year later had their first first number one hit with “Mr. Tambourine Man.” This success was followed up in 1968 when Crosby formed one of the first supergroups, Crosby, Stills & Nash, with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash (At one point the group included Neil Young). Cementing their reputation as a leading group at the forefront of the hippie movement, the group won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1969.

Crosby was born on August 14, 1941. Crosby, Stills and Nash were at one time joined by rocker Neil Young and the group became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. They performed their first concert as a trio at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969. A prolific songwriter, Crosby wrote several of the hits he sang, including hippy hits Almost Cut My Hair and Deja Vu. He continued to play music through the decades with his recent solo album, For Free, released in 2021.
Social media was rife with remembrances of the late Crosby with Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson tweeting that the star was an, “unbelievable talent,” and a, “wonderful person.”
The day before his death was announced Crosby’s account tweeted that his favorite Beatles to song to play on a rainy day was Eleanor Rigby.
