Jimmy Carter, former United States President, has died at the age of 100. His family confirmed he passed away in his home in Georgia.
Carter was a peanut farmer who became the 39th U.S. President after the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal. A one-term American President, he moved on to become a global humanitarian, positively impacting the lives of many.
President Jimmy Carter’s White House Legacy
Carter passed away on Sunday, December 29, over a year after being admitted to a hospice in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. The small town was where he and his wife, Rosalynn (who passed away at the age of 96 in November 2023), spent most of their lives.
Carter was a Navy officer, businessman, author, woodworker, evangelist, philanthropist, as well as a politician. Deep in his faith, Carter once said, “My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference.”
A Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 U.S. presidential race as Georgia governor, with a ‘no-frills’ campaign, promising not to lie to the American people in the aftermath of Richard Nixon’s controversial presidency.
He narrowly defeated Republican nominee, Gerald Ford, who had decreased in popularity for pardoning Nixon.
Still, double-digit inflation, unprecedented gas lines, and the hostage Iran crisis that lasted 444 days, not to mention 8 Americans dying under a failed hostage rescue in April 1980, helped welcome in a landslide victory for Republican Ronald Reagan during the 1980 U.S. Election.

Life After The Presidency
While Carter was quite unpopular as he exited as President, he went on to have an incredible post-presidential career. He was given the Nobel peace prize in 2002 for his tireless work in peacemaking and human rights; something conducted under the Carter Center, an organization he founded in the early ‘80s with his wife.
In fact, the Carter Center has been credited for helping cure Guinea worm disease, trachoma, and river blindness. Carter also played a large role within Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps build houses for those less fortunate.
