Shelley Duvall – Her Impact In The World Of Films

Duvall’s work with Stanley Kubrick in The Shining, which required extensive shooting that took over a year to complete, was said to push the actress to her limits.

Some of the scenes needed over 100 takes, with the baseball sequence appearing in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most takes needed in a single dialogue seen.

Shelley is also well-known for her work with director Robert Altman, and her performance in his 3 Woman, where she received a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress and a BAFTA nomination.

Her first onscreen appearance was in Altman’s Brewster McCloud, and went on to work with the director in other films like McCabe & Mrs. Miller, as well as Thieves Like Us, before scoring her Nashville role, in 1975. After the attention she received in the movie, Altman also cast her in the Indians and Buffalo Bill.

Other film credits include playing Olive Oyl in Altman’s 1980 version of Popeye, as well as Time Bandits and the Steve Martin comedy, Roxanne.

In the 1980s, she produced a series of kids’ anthology shows based on classic stories. The shows included guest stars like Robin Williams, Ed Asner, Molly Ringwald, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Laura Dern, as well as famous directors by the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Tim Burton, and Ivan Passer.
