5 Times Royals Bucked Queen Elizabeth’s Tradition to Rock Bright Colors

5 Times Royals Bucked Queen Elizabeth's Tradition to Rock Bright ColorsBritish royal family news reveals that the monarchy is full of dictums and protocols outlining all manner of do’s and don’ts: from makeup to clothing to PDA.

Queen Elizabeth is said to have had a strict restriction on one particular beauty trend, although one publication disputes that.

As proof, Marie Claire describes five stand out incidents of the royal women engaging in colorful displays—keep reading to discover where they wore their fabulous colors!

Did The Queen Have a Nail Polish Rule?

It was reported that the late Queen Elizabeth forbid colored nail polish, instead preferring natural or very pale pink nails —but there are several instances in which the royals presented colorful nail art, disproving this belief.

1) That Time Diana Paired Her Polish With her Gown

In a classic photo from 1992, the late Diana, looks stunning in a white dress, talking to Placido Domingo. In her hands is a bouquet of flowers and her gorgeous scarlet manicure is on full display!

No doubt she enjoyed every minute of Verdi’s opera “Otello.”

2) The Duchess of York Loves Red Nails

Did Diana influence her fellow WAG, Sarah, Duchess of York? Sarah was never a blushing violet, and during a royal visit to Canada in 1989 her nails bore a lipstick-red manicure. She and then-husband Prince Andrew were in the country for official royal business, something neither of them are allowed to do anymore.

3) Princess Kate’s Ruby Red Nail Lacquer

On Easter 2023 the Princess of Wales was pictured holding her youngest child Prince Louis’ hand, and there was no mistaking her ruby red nail polish.

The polish contrasted brightly with her vivid blue coat and purse and it’s safe to say that the public was mildly shocked.

Decades later, Kate Middleton repeated her burgundy trend at the Royal Family’s 2023 Easter service. Normally Kate prefers a pale, natural color on her fingers, so both times she really stood out—for all the right reasons!

4) The Duchess of Edinburgh Goes Gray

Duchess Sophie has been described as the late Queen’s favorite daughter-in-law and she rarely if ever puts a foot wrong. But on one occasion Sophie, married to Prince Edward, deviated from the alleged nail color code.

While visiting a children’s hospice in February 2020, the royal was seen rocking a lovely gray lacquer which complemented her fashion choice beautifully.

5) Zara Tindall Rocks Black

Zara Tindall is the daughter of the Princess Royal, Anne. Both women have competed in the Olympics in equestrian events so it’s fitting that it was during a day at the races that Zara showed off a surprising manicure.

While watching Princess Anne’s horse compete at the Cheltenham race course, Zara was photographed sporting a black coat and matching black nail polish, which is hue not often seen on royal hands.
