5 Ways Meghan Markle’s Style Was Too Modern For The Monarchy

Meghan MarkleWhile royal observers have found plenty of reasons why they should criticize Meghan Markle with all of the things she’s done and said during her stint as a full-time working member of the royal family, if there was anything that garnered the most headlines about the Duchess of Sussex, it was her wardrobe. Here are five reasons why Meghan’s style might have been a little too modern for the monarchy.

#1 Off-Shoulder But Not Off-Sides

Meghan Markle didn’t marry the Future King of England. Instead, she married his brother. And because she fell in love with Prince Harry and not Prince William, this gave her more of an opportunity to experiment with her fashionable looks during her royal engagements and public appearances. Sure, she might have not worn pantyhose during her appearances with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, but she didn’t commit any major criminal offenses by doing so. And while she might have sported an off-shoulder look at her first Trooping of The Colours event, it wasn’t like she was offsides.

#2 No Buttons And No Floral Here

Compared to Kate Middleton’s style, which consists of a lot of buttons, conservative necklines, and yes, more buttons, Meghan Markle had a very different approach to her royal style. While Kate continues to look as regal and classic as possible, Meghan chose pieces that were more cutting edge and modern in style so much so that many people couldn’t help but think that Kate looked like she was rummaging in Camilla Parker Bowles’ closet whenever she stood by Meghan.

#3 Meghan’s Pricey Wardrobe

From Stella McCartney to Givenchy, Burberry, and Carolina Herrera, there’s no denying that Meghan Markle’s wardrobe was a rather pricey one and yes, fir for an American princess. As a matter of fact, Meghan wore a Ralph & Russo couture gown for her engagement photos with Prince Harry that cost an estimated $135,000, according to reports. And yes, all those zeros stay there. What’s more, Meghan’s wedding dress cost three times the average American salary. Can you say, “Val-en-tin-OHHHH?”

#4 Royal, But With A Hollywood Twist

While her sister-in-law Kate Middleton has a handful of her favorite designers that she wears over and over again (like Jenny Packman), Meghan chose designers that were near and dear to her heart and many that either represented her hometown back in L.A. or were either ethical or sustainable clothing brands on a budget that Meghan loved. One of the reasons why brands such as Everlane, Veja, and Cuyana have made their way onto the fashion map is because Meghan wore an affordable piece from these companies during her royal tenure.

#5 That Black Nail Polish

While Meghan Markle was certainly one of the most controversial figures that the royal family has seen in modern times, her offenses were mostly because she didn’t want to follow every single rule and protocol that was set by generations of royals before her.

During one memorable appearance during her pregnancy with her son Archie Harrison, royal fans recall seeing Meghan rubbing and cradling her growing baby bump while also wearing black nail polish on her fingers. Yes, the color black!

As many royal fans know, when it comes to picking out your royal nail polish, you must be as clear and neutral as one can be. But clearly Meghan had no intentions in playing by someone else’s fashion rule book and that’s why she chose to write her own instead.

If the shoe doesn’t fit don’t put it on. She knew the rules going in. MEGAIN just didn’t think she would have to play by them. If you want all the Royal perks you play by the rules!
