Queen Elizabeth spent the day at Windsor Castle after cancelling her annual trip to Sandringham due to Covid-19 concerns. The family typically gather there to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

While members of the royal family attended a Christmas morning service at St. George Chapel in the Windsor Castle complex, Her Majesty was not in attendance. No reason was given for her absence although she has had medical issues in the past few weeks which interrupted her presence at several key events.

The Queen Delivered A Poignant Holiday Speech

On Saturday the Queen released a pre-recorded Christmas address which was widely praised for its personal touch. In it she addressed her late husband’s death in April and praised several family members who have stayed with her and stood beside her in her time of sorrow. The Queen and Prince Philip were married for 73 years and he died in April at age 99.

Despite the ongoing pandemic and troubles within her own family, she managed to stay positive in her address. “Although it’s a time of great happiness and good cheer for many, Christmas can be hard for those who have lost loved ones,” she said, a framed photo of herself with her husband next to her.

But she added that while the year has brought many challenges, “we can still enjoy the many happy traditions.”
