Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle managed to shock the world with their seismic public announcement back in January when they revealed that they wanted to become part-time royals. In other words, they still wanted to have one step in the door over at Buckingham Palace while doing what they want and making the kind of money that they wanted, too.
It didn’t take long for Queen Elizabeth to respond and as a result, she made it clear that when it comes to royal life, you are either in or you are out. Beginning March 31, they will no longer carry out royal engagements for the Queen. And while they were technically retain their HR titles, both Harry and Meghan said that they won’t use them.
Instead, reports indicate that Prince Harry only wants to be known as ‘Harry’ while his wife just wants to be ‘Meghan.’ Of course, after marrying Prince Harry Meghan’s last name officially became Meghan Mountbatten-Windsor and not Markle. But because the media has long been referring to her as Meghan Markle (just like the Duchess of Cambridge is still called Kate Middleton), no one has really said anything about the surname change until now.
With that said, there are further reports that suggest Harry and Meghan might also opt for Sussex as their official last name. While there’s been some back-and-forth kerfuffle over the use of the word ‘royal’ there’s a good chance that we might be referring to the couple as Harry and Meghan in the future.
While Harry did say during a travel conference in Scotland this month that he just wants to be called by his first name, Meghan is yet to make any comments about that matter. The couple is currently in London getting ready to partake in their last engagements and public appearances as official working members of the royal family.
