Camilla Parker Bowles might still be in coronation isolation with the rest of the British royal family, but she’s also hard at work helping those in need during these troubling and uncertain times. As a matter of fact, the Duchess of Cornwall is highlighting the fact that domestic abuse has been on the rise ever since the UK put in place strict shelter-in-place orders to help stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). Here’s what you need to know.

According to the Clarence House social media pages, calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline have risen almost 50 percent. Many victims have said that living at home with a “domestic terrorist” has made the coronavirus lockdown especially hard one them, as abuse often thrives on isolation. What’s more, experts believe that the lockdown has increased the risk of domestic abuse by stripping back the safe places many victims can go to, like work. That’s why she’s now working with SafeLives and You Magazine in the UK to highlight this concern.

Speaking about the issue, the Duchess of Cornwall offered this, “SafeLives provides a lifeline to women, men and children who are suffering, or who have suffered, from domestic abuse. When I first visited them several years ago, I listened to the harrowing stories from these remarkably brave women and I knew that I wanted to do something to help… I very much hope that, after reading their stories, you will want to help too. During these exceptional times, it is even more important that we all look out for each other. If you think someone you know might be at risk, then please follow the advice from SafeLives and ‘reach in.’ It really could make all the difference.”
