Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, Shares Special Message

It’s becoming obvious that the Duchess of Cornwall will not grow tired of telling us about the importance of introducing children to the joys of reading. To expand on the work, she launched a website a few months back as a means to share her favorite literature, including poetry books and children’s stories.

Now, she’s beginning a campaign that’ll see her trying to recruit hundreds of primary schools to support a new campaign that should revolutionize libraries across the country.

The Duchess of Cornwall is seeing a need – that there’s been an under investment in school facilities that has left one in four schools in deprived areas without a library – and she wants to fill that need.

Even though there’s been an expert research done to prove that children reading for pleasure promotes good grades, makes them more capable of showing empathy towards others, with the added benefit of improved wellbeing, there’s still no law making it mandatory for schools to have one.

The Primary School Library Aliance, founded by the National Literacy Trust and publisher Penguin Random House, aims to transform 1,000 primary schools by 2025. By that time, the Alliance should be able to provide thousands of children with books and give teachers the training they need.

There are other programs, like the Puffin World of Stories and Chase Rewarding Futures school library programme, are also there to help thousands of children find their passion in reading.

The new school term will see disadvantaged schools across the country invited to access these programs, which is geared towards providing free books, revamping existing libraries or even building a completely new one to entice a new generation of readers.

Camilla, 74, recently sat down to an exclusive interview with The Mirror and talked about her new passion project about getting children to read.

“We all know the power of a good book and the impact it can have on reading and writing skills, as well as wellbeing.

“I am delighted that so many schools will benefit from this wonderful legacy of mini libraries and I’d love to see more children benefit from reading books like these to improve children’s wellbeing long into the future.”

As part of her 75th birthday celebrations, Camilla has unveiled her “Birthday Books” scheme: the marvelous program will give 75 primary schools in disadvantaged areas across the UK a wellbeing-themed mini library.

The program is soaring to the new highs with over 25,000 pupils accessing special “kinderboxes” in its first week alone. The titles provided cover the full primary school age range from 4-11 years. The best thing is that children and young people helped in the selection of the available titles.

Camilla added: “The Duchess’s Birthday Books kinderboxes are full of titles that promise endless adventure, comfort, excitement and joy to young readers.”
