For all of his 72 years, Prince Charles has lived in a fishbowl. The eldest son of Queen Elizabeth, he is first in line to the British throne.
It’s true that we all change over time, and this is perhaps most apparent in photographs that freeze moments for us to reflect back on.
Judi James, a body language expert, has scrutinized pictures of Charles with his grandson Louis as well as his own children, William and Harry, as youngsters. Her conclusion? She sees stunning differences—do pictures really tell a thousand stories?
As a father Prince Charles was fairly traditional, even old-fashioned, perhaps reflecting the times.
According to Judi, “Whether Charles is a tactile man in private or not his public body language displays have often been a reflection of his upbringing as a more old-fashioned, hands-off royal.”
“When the boys were born Charles was given them to hold outside the hospital but, dressed in his formal jacket and tie, he appeared to pick them from Diana’s arms like delicate porcelain vases wrapped in blankets and then hand them back with an air of relief.”
How Exactly Did Charles Hold His Kids?
“As his own father did with him, Charles seemed to adopt the rather practical one arm, one hip method of carrying his boys over the years … his touch often looked awkward. Like many men of that period, Charles seemed to leave the affectionate cuddling to his sons’ mother.
“Diana seemed to put a lot of effort into changing that, but the public hugs for their own sons always seemed to come from her rather than her husband.”
Did Diana Hug The Boys More Than Charles?
According to the body language expert, “After Diana died and the boys grew older there were even clues that William and Harry had adopted their mother’s role of urging Charles to be more tactile in public.”
Did they teach him to be more affectionate? That’s hard to say, but Judi refers to a recent picture as evidence of Charles’ softening.
The sweet picture, taken by Kate Middleton, shows Charles fully embracing young Louis, his eyes closed as if savoring the moment.
Additionally, it was noted during an April video conference with the BBC, that Charles had a plethora of family photos proudly on display.
