Princess Diana Dropped Jaw-Dropping Secrets To Richard Kay That Have Now Come To Light
If you heard the interview you’ll remember perhaps her most memorable phrase: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” a reference to Camilla Parker Bowles who has now taken Diana’s vacated place alongside Charles.
If not, you will be able to relive it as three documentaries have been made to mark the event.
Even today the interview is startling in its details. Some accused Diana of wearing stage makeup to make herself look pitiable and the depth of her revelations was stunning including telling the world she had an affair with Army officer James Hewitt.
“Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him,” Diana eeked out.
The Interview Broadcast On November 20, 1995, With Diana, Is Still Shocking 25 Years After It First Aired
Make no mistake, Diana didn’t just expose herself, she took Prince Charles down with her. At one point she questioned his credentials to be king and then spat out that Camilla Parker Bowles was the reason her marriage failed.
It is ironic then that the only thing that compares to the utter scandal of Diana’s aggressively unrepentant move is the equally vicious move made against the monarchy by her son Harry with Megxit.
Their jaw-dropping conduct was similar in many ways. Diana told absolutely no one about the interview. Likewise, Prince Harry didn’t bother to tell his family he was divorcing them. One has to wonder what it felt like to so publicly and unapologetically slap the royal family silly.
Yet within 48 hours after the airing, Diana was out of the country and having second thoughts. For one, her performance fueled those in Charles’s camp who was already convinced that she was unstable unbalanced.
She later told Kay that she regretted parts of the interview, like recklessly confessing her affair with Hewitt and calling into questioning Charles’s ability to reign.
But what really hurt, according to Kay, was that the interview upset her 13-year-old son Prince William. That boggles the mind. Did she not once consider what her train wreck interview would do to the two people most precious to her in the world, William and his brother Harry? I don’t know what’s worse—not having the foresight to protect your kids or having it and ignoring it.
