The Crown is all about the life and times of the reigning sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. Here’s what we know about how the royal family feels about the series devoted to airing their linen in public.
Will Queen Elizabeth Be Watching Season 4 Of The Crown?
Because Elizabeth II is in charge, her era is the second Elizabethan epoch. It begins in the post-WWII years through the UK’s departure from the European Union. It is this slice of history that the show aims to reveal.
As such The Crown has focused on the more tension-filled moments at the heart of the family, especially their sacrificial behavior in the name of, you guessed it, the crown. Season 1 brought up the emotional impact wrought by Elizabeth denying her sister permission to marry her first choice, Peter Townsend. Season 2 looked at the much speculated upon the marriage of Elizabeth and Philip and Season 3 highlighted the confrontations between Elizabeth and Charles over his infamous relationship with Camilla.
None Of The Storylines To Date Have Been Extremely Flattering To The Royal Family
The content of these storylines has necessarily portrayed the family in at least a jaundiced light. The Queen herself is a somewhat sympathetic figure and she is shown as the one with the iron fist, keeping the family going.
But in the midst of her decorum, the show has displayed decidedly indecorous behavior on her relatives’ parts including tales of rumored infidelity.
So it should come as no surprise that the family has never commented on The Crown. Nonetheless, there have been little hints dropped. Princess Eugenie said in Vanity Fair that her “Granny” watched a couple of episodes. Another source told The Daily Express that the queen likes it but found it, “too heavily dramatized.”
On the other hand, The Express has printed tales from royal sources who say Elizabeth was not impressed with some of Season 2’s cinematic choices, particularly that of her husband Philip.
And straight from the horse’s mouth, Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Elizabeth, said Prince William told her he didn’t watch the show.
But when show creator Peter Morgan confirmed that he tries to keep royal courtiers up to date on what is coming up, the Palace put out a statement announcing its neutrality on the topic.
