British royal family news divulges that President Donald Trump wants to take King Charles up on his offer to join the British Commonwealth, thus increasing America’s connection to the United Kingdom.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social account: “I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!” Here’s what to know about this audacious situation.
US Joins British Commonwealth?
Trump’s response on Friday came after the Daily Mail reported on Thursday “that the King would make a ‘secret’ offer to the president for the U.S. to become the next ‘associate member’ of the Commonwealth.”
The Commonwealth has 56 member states, most of them former territories of the British Empire. The nations “are connected through their use of the English language and historical-cultural ties” with membership in the mainly ceremonial group voluntary.
In total the member nations have a combined population of nearly 3 billion, making it one of the world’s “oldest political associations of states.”
How is This Possible?
As monarch, King Charles is the head of the commonwealth, as his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, was before him. Will the move enhance the “special relationship” between the US and UK, and bolster relations between the US and the European Union? Some think that is the goal.
Trump and King Charles forged a close relationship during Trump’s first term in office. The outlet notes that having the US affiliate with the Commonwealth “was originally floated in Trump’s first term, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, who Trump adored.”
The president and first lady make their state visit to the UK later this year and we should know then if the two leaders finalize the idea.
Will the US Become a Part of the Commonwealth?
A member of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) told DailyMail.com that the idea is “being discussed at the highest levels … It would be a wonderful move that would symbolize Britain’s close relationship with the US.”
They added that POTUS adores Britain and respects the Royal Family greatly.
It’s an open secret that Trump is a longtime fan of the British monarchy and the royal family. When Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House earlier this month he personally delivered King Charles’ invitation for Trump to make a state visit to the UK later in the year.
Trump made a state visit in his first term as POTUS when Queen Elizabeth was the monarch. Tell us royal fans, what do you make of the king wanting the US to be a part of the Commonwealth?
