Earl Spencer Reveals Prince Harry Reaches Out More Than Prince William

Earl Charles Spencer addressed his relationship with Prince William and Prince Harry after he published his memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. 

The book brought a lot of questions, especially after he said that Harry didn’t consult with him about it. Read on to find out what he said about both of his nephews.

Who Reaches Out?

During an interview on October 1 with Katie Couric, Charles Spencer was asked about his relationships with Prince William and Prince Harry. The Earl revealed that he hears “a lot more” from the Duke of Sussex than he does from the Prince of Wales.

Spencer explained that there are occasions when Harry simply needs him more. However, Princess Diana’s brother was quick to clarify his neutral position, stressing that he isn’t taking sides between the brothers.

Why Harry Returned

According to AOL.com, Spencer also shared his thoughts on Harry’s various returns to the United Kingdom.

Although he admitted he didn’t know about the visits beforehand, Spencer pointed out ,”I guess he’s English and he wants his children to have that culture, too.”

Lots of people speculate online that the couple were unhappy in the USA. Others suggest that financial pressures might have played a role in the return.

According to Radar Online, “Their return comes after some of the lucrative media agreements underpinning their post-royal independence have ended or been scaled back.”

However, Earl Spencer seemed to think that there wasn’t necessarily a negative reason for it, and noted that Harry and Meghan had been happy “in Montecito.”

Charles Spencer thought Harry’s visits might be because he and Meghan come from different social cultures. So, he said, “I think when two people marry from different cultures, you don’t want your culture forgotten, really.”

There if They Need Him

After Harry stepped back from royal duties in 2020, his relationships with his dad, King Charles, and Prince William grew rather distant. So, it makes sense that Harry might turn to his uncle.

As reported by People, the Earl previously talked about how he notified both of Diana’s sons that he was writing the book. He didn’t say what William’s reaction was, but Harry did hope there wouldn’t be anything embarrassing about him in it.

Most royal watchers are well aware that Spencer and Harry seem close, especially as the news arrived that Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the kids spent time at the Spencer family estate. Althorp is the place where Princess Diana was laid to rest.

An Elderly Uncle

InStyle noted that Charles Spencer talked about feeling like an “elderly uncle” who doesn’t get involved with Prince William or Harry unless they need him.

He also mentioned that they are grown up now, and as adults, he really doesn’t worry very much about what they might think of him.
