These past few days have opened a flood gate that’s yet to entirely close. Even prior to the so-called “manipulated” Mother’s Day picture of Princess Kate, the “where is Kate” campaign had taken the online world by force. It’s not dwindling.
Instead the conspiracy theories have gotten wilder and weirder. Okay, I might chuckle at the “hide and seek gone wrong” one but cloning, abduction, torture? Where are people coming up with thoughts like that?
Mind you, we are talking about a woman who is surrounded by her mother and father, her husband, her children, her siblings and in-law and suddenly a bunch of people on the internet care more about her than those closest to her?
Princess Kate’s Mother’s Day Picture Creates Controversy that Has A Global Reach
Believe it or not, the White House has felt the effects of Princess Kate using Photoshop to edit pictures of herself and her children, which she shared with her fans on the joint social media account she co-owns with husband Prince William to mark Mother’s Day.
Associated Press kinda started the flood by pointing out that they would stop running the picture in their papers due to several signs of “manipulation.” Once the announcement was made, the madness took over.
People started wondering whether the picture was even real; some claimed it was an old picture of Kate’s; some blamed AI; some said it was Madam Tussaud’s waxwork; others said some things too crazy to repeat.
The pressure then started mounting, with several royal experts – boldly led by Piers Morgan – demanding that the original be released to put an end to the rumor mill.
In fact one article went as far as claiming, “The only way to stop the ugly rumours and speculation is for the royals to come clean about Kate and Charles’s health.”
The picture fiasco got so out of hand that Kate decided to issue a personal apology to her fans, revealing that, like so many others, she decided to experiment with photo editing tools.
But amidst all this madness, Glamour’s Elle Turner blazed in with a voice of reason, writing, “Kate may be a public figure, but she’s not public property. Whether she was a princess, a public servant, a paralegal or a paramedic, she doesn’t owe us an explanation of what’s going on with her body.”
She added: “The scrutiny on Kate feels so heavy, many people in full health would break under the weight of it, and we’ve already been told: Kate is not in full health. Instead, what’s likely an already tough recovery has been made all the more intense, scary and pressurised before Kate’s even returned to public duty, where every move she makes will be dissected.”
Are we a compassionate species or do we need to do more evolving to get there?
