How It’s Possible For Prince Charles To Become King Without The Crown

Prince CharlesWill he or won’t he? That is the question many citizens are asking about Prince Charles and the throne. As in: will he be crowned, will he ascend or will his more popular son William leapfrog him into the position (many would not mind seeing the latter apparently).

Queen Elizabeth has already appointed the Duke of Cornwall to succeed her but in fact, it’s possible for Prince Charles to become the sovereign without going through the formality of being crowned.

Will Prince Charles Ever Get A Shot At Ruling The UK?

Prince Charles is first in line to the British throne which means there is every expectation that he will take over when his 94-year old mother either steps down or passes away. If the queen unexpectedly dies the whole transfer of power process would be simplified actually because while the crowning, otherwise knows as a coronation, is traditional it is not a requirement.

If you’re a royal aficionado this might be news to you, but according to Express, “A coronation is unnecessary for a king or queen to reign, and some monarchs have gone without in the past.”

If Charles Gets To Sit At The Big Kid’s Table Will He Actually Have A Coronation?

In the happenstance that Her Majesty dies without a transfer of power, Prince Charles automatically becomes King of England at the moment of her death—coronation unnecessary. It is expected however that he will have a ceremony in such a circumstance but if he did not he wouldn’t be the first to forgo tradition.

For instance, back in the day, King Edward VIII reigned for nearly a year without being crowned.

The public was clued into Prince Charles’s appointment in 2018 although his ascension was a given. In 2018 Queen Elizabeth issued a formal request for the Commonwealth Heads of Government to make her son her successor.

At that time she said during an official Buckingham Palace meeting, “It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949.”
