How Old Was Prince William When Diana Died?

Prince WilliamPrincess Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997. How old was Prince William when his mother was killed?

Two Young Sons

Diana Spencer became re-acquainted with Prince Charles after moving to London in 1978. Charles and Diana married in 1981 after a long courtship. Charles and Diana’s union produced two children, both heirs to the throne in England. Prince William was born in 1982 and Prince Harry was born in 1984. When Princess Diana was killed her sons were 12 and 15. When Diana was killed, the boys were with their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Continuing Diana’s Legacy

Although Diana is no longer with her sons, the boys have chosen to keep up with a lot of her charities to keep her legacy alive. Diana was a huge humanitarian and was loved by most people who met her. The loss of Diana had a huge impact on her sons. William was interviewed on the twentieth anniversary of his mother’s death and had a few touching things to say.

William said of his mother’s passing, “Initially, there is a sense of profound shock and disbelief that this could ever happen to you. Real grief often does not hit home until much later. For many it is a grief never entirely lost. Life is altered as you know it, and not a day goes past without you thinking about the one you have lost. I know that over time it is possible to learn to live with what has happened and, with the passing of years, to retain or rediscover cherished memories.”

William Still Feels His Mother’s Presence

Although Diana left a young man grieving when she died, William admits that when he got married he could feel his mother’s presence. William also laughing says that Diana would have been a great grandmother to his children but a nightmare grandmother as well. William reminisces about bathtime saying that Diana would probably come in and cause a scene having bubbles and bathwater strawn everywhere and then leave.

Does William Have Any Regrets?

Like all children who have lost a parent, William does admit to having one regret in particular. When talking about his time with his grandmother that summer, he remembers a phone call that he wishes he had handled differently. “The very last memory I have is a phone call from Balmoral [Castle in Scotland]. At the time, Harry and I were running around, minding our own business, playing with our cousins and having a very good time. Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say ‘Goodbye, see you later, can I go off?’ If I’d known what was going to happen I wouldn’t have been quite so blasé about it. That phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily.”

Now that both boys are adults with children, they probably understand a lot more of why their mother was in touch with them so much. Clearly, they loved their mother and were typical kids when she passed away. Diana would be proud of her sons efforts to keep up her legacy.
