British royal family news reveals that Queen Margrethe of Denmark announced her abdication as Queen of Denmark during a stunning New Year’s Eve state of the nation address.
Her oldest son Crown Prince Frederik (as King Frederik X) will secede his mother on January 14. Pundits are conjecturing how this shock abdication could affect Prince William and Princess Kate and the answer may surprise you!
Royal News – A Low-Key Danish Coronation
Following the death of the UK’s Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, Margrethe became Europe’s longest-reigning monarch. In a keen twist of faith, Margrethe and Elizabeth are cousins!
When the former’s son becomes king it is thought he will have a much less opulent ceremony than the one that Prince Charles had.
According to the Daily Mail, the transfer of the monarchy to Frederik “involves little other than the signing of papers, the changing of royal standards and a proclamation.”
How might this transfer affect the future King William? Some pundits think he may prefer a no-frills coronation such as Frederik’s versus the pomp and circumstance expected to come with his.
Royal News – Will William Downscale?
Of course, Princess Kate may have a different perspective. William has been to the monarchy born his entire life while Kate is a commoner who may be looking forward to a flashy coronation.
Kate is familiar with Frederik’s wife, Crown Princess Mary. Both women will be queen and the outlet reports that the two women “spent a lot of time in conversation with Mary at Royal Ascot when she visited in 2016. They exchanged numbers. Will her low-key elevation help Kate to pick up tips for her own no-fuss crowning?”
Royal Family News – Kate And Mary Have Much I’n Common
The two monarchies have historic ties, with Elizabeth and Margrethe close cousins. Margrethe once said that Elizabeth’s devotion to duty was an inspiring: “She is a good deal more experienced than I am.” She added that her cousin taught her to “understand that I must dedicate my life to my nation like she has done, and in that way she has been very important to me.”
Elizabeth and Margrethe addressed each other in public as “Your Majesty” but in private.
Margrethe was known to her cousin as “Daisy.” Both monarchs believed their roles to be lifelong obligations which is why Margrethe’s abdication was a sudden jolt to Denmark and a shock to the world.
