Is Prince Charles Planning To Send His Father To A Senior Home In Surbiton?

At age 98, Prince Philip is the longest-serving royal consort in British history which makes sense since his wife, Queen Elizabeth, is the longest-reigning monarch in history. But this potentially leaves a rather sticky question for their son, and the queen’s successor Prince Charles; will he be forced to make a controversial decision about his father?

Philip turns 99 this week and by all accounts, he wishes to have a very low key day with his wife in Windsor Castle. Despite a few recent health scares, including hospitalization before Christmas, he appears to be relatively healthy for a man of his age.

Prince Philip Is Apparently Robust And Healthy

Which begs a certain question, what happens if he outlives the 94-year old queen? In 2018, Royal Central actually went there and published an article that questioned what would happen if Philip outlived his wife.

The author, Jamie Samhan wrote, “Both George of Denmark, who became Duke of Cumberland when he married Queen Anne, and Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, both died before their wives. When George VI died, Queen Elizabeth became the Queen Mother, but a similar King Father position would not be possible for Philip as he is a prince.”

Chiming in, royal historian Marlene Koenig also claimed that Philip’s rank within the royal family would not change.

Will There Be A Change In The Royal Family If Queen Elizabeth Dies Before Prince Philip?

If Philip is alive upon the Queen’s death, Charles would inherit the crown and have to make a delicate decision about Philip.

Koenig explained, “As for Philip’s precedence, he currently sits directly before Prince Charles, but as Charles takes the throne, he will have to make a choice if his father will be before Prince William. I doubt he would be uprooted. He stays at Sandringham, like Wolferton. Don’t think he would be sent to a senior home in Surbiton.”

Philip Is Currently At Windsor Castle During The Coronavirus Pandemic

Philip seems acutely aware of Charles’ dilemma and has reportedly even joked about it! Tom Bower wrote in his unauthorized book, Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion, and Defiance of Prince Charles, that Philip once made a dark joke about his age.

According to Bower, “At a recent dinner with friends in Mayfair, Philip had joked about his determination to live beyond 95.”

“The reason for his and the Queen’s longevity, he explained amid his friends’ laughter, was to keep Charles from the throne.”
