Is Prince Philip Preventing Prince Charles From Becoming King?

There’s no doubt that 98-year old Prince Philip has served as royal consort dutifully and in an iron man manner. Before retiring in 2017 he was the longest surviving active prince consort in UK history.
He completed a whopping 22,219 solo engagements following Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne in 1952 and never wavered in his royal duties.
But now comes word that there could be a jaw-dropping reason behind his dedication.
Prince Philip has been devoted to the monarchy
The Duke of Edinburgh has a famously sharp sense of humor and apparently made a dark joke about his service to his friends.
According to Tom Bower’s 2018 biography, Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion, and Defiance of Prince Charles, Philip made a joke at his son Charles’ expense, in regard to his future reign.
Bowers says that he was told, “At a recent dinner with friends in Mayfair, Philip had joked about his determination to live beyond 95. The reason for his and the Queen’s longevity, he explained amid his friends’ laughter, was to keep Charles from the throne.”

Prince Philip went on that both he and the queen were in good health in their 90’s and could live another 10 years.
“Charles would have little opportunity to damage the monarchy if he was king for only a brief period,” he was alleged to have said.
Do Philip and Charles clash over how the monarchy should be run?
In fact, royal watchers have pointed out in the past that Philip and Charles have different ideas about the monarchy.
Bower said, “Philip did not hide his scorn for his son’s achievements and visions,” which include a, “slimmed-down monarchy,” independent of taxpayers’ support.
Charles also has the idea to buck tradition and make Buckingham Palace a, “space for the nation,” turning Windsor Castle the monarch’s home base.
But, Philip apparently believes such a move might be “harmful” to the monarchy. According to royal writer Catherine Mayer, Philip, “actively opposed Prince Charles’ plan for the monarchy because he wants to change the setup.”

Because Charles has expressed his own opinions and even lobbied politicians over causes such as climate change, foxhunting, and genetically modified food, he in effect has challenged the apolitical nature expected of a constitutional monarch.
Charles has addressed these concerns, saying to the BBC in 2018, that he has no intention to intervene with politics when he becomes king.
“I’m not that stupid. I do realize that it is a separate exercise being sovereign,” he said.

In an effort to be “relevant,” Prince Charles tends to be much more liberal than his mother, the Queen. However, he still likes all of the ceremonial aspects of monarchy, which he will find more difficult to manage with a smaller “firm.” Though Charles has some very good ideas which would certainly benefit Britain, he lacks his mother’s patience and tolerance, both important attributes for a monarch. In addition, people have long memories regarding his disastrous marriage to Diana and may have trouble accepting Camilla as Queen Consort. Let’s hope that the present Queen remains on the throne for a long time. Even at her advanced age, she has all of the wonderful personal characteristics which the sovereign needs, in addition to the long historical perspective. Once she is gone, it is possible that the British people will not regard the monarchy quite so positively.
