For those who don’t know, Meghan Markle has engaged in a libel suit against the British publication, Associated Newspaper Ltd (ANL).
This corporation is the parent company for a pair of tabloids that took one of Meghan Markle’s private, personal handwritten letters to her father, Thomas Markle, and published portions of it. The tabloids then went on to paint Meghan as a heartless, ungrateful daughter.
During much of the court proceedings, up until now, Meghan has actually lost ground against the British publishing giant. Indeed, Meghan was ordered to pay court fees totaling £67,000 pounds during the first round. However, reports have come in that while Meghan must pay a significant sum, she actually won when it came to her desire to keep the identities of five friends who spoke up in her defense in “anonymous” interviews, secret.
Meghan Appeals To The Court
Some royal commentators believe that Meghan Markle was simply trying to protect her friends as any normal person would. After all, lawyers for Associated Newspapers were attempting to learn the identities of Meghan’s friends. These attorneys might then have leaked them to the tabloids, who would in turn smear Meghan Markle’s friends in the press.
In order to protect her friends, Meghan said in a written statement to the court that, “Associated Newspapers, the owner of The Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday, is threatening to publish the names of five women – five private citizens – who made a choice on their own to speak anonymously with a US media outlet more than a year ago, to defend me from the bullying behavior of Britain’s tabloid media.”
Meghan continued, writing that, “These five women are not on trial, and nor am I. The publisher of the Mail on Sunday is the one on trial.
It is this publisher that acted unlawfully and is attempting to evade accountability; to create a circus and distract from the point of this case – that the Mail on Sunday unlawfully published my private letter. Each of these women is a private citizen, a young mother, and each has a basic right to privacy.”
The Judge Slaps Back At Meghan
While the judge in the case, Mr. Justice Warby, ruled in Meghan’s favor regarding her five friends, he didn’t spare Meghan when it came to some harsh criticism. The judge accused Meghan of playing a game of “tit-for-tat.” Indeed, his exact words were, “It is … clear that neither side has, so far, been willing to confine the presentation of its case to the courtroom. Both sides have demonstrated an eagerness to play out the merits of their dispute in public, outside the courtroom, and primarily in media reports.”
Mr. Justice Warby continued, noting that, “to fight proceedings in court and through litigation PR or sensational reporting at one and the same time is not designed to enhance understanding of the legal process. For a party to file and immediately publicize prejudicial and partisan characterizations of the other’s litigation conduct in the media before a hearing certainly does not assist.”
Of course, those who have been keeping up with the drama that is Meghan Markle know that Meghan seems to be quite willing and able to push herself and her own narrative in various media. In fact, some might say that she has unceasingly done so since moving to Los Angeles, despite she and Prince Harry’s claims that all they wanted was “privacy” when stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British Royal Family.
