Are Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle attending the big Royal Family event? On what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday, her sons will be recognizing the immense role she played in her life and are putting aside their recent tumultuous relationship to pay homage to her. On July 1, Prince William and Harry will reunite for the unveiling of a statue they commissioned to honor the late Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Gardens.
Prince Harry is set to travel to the U.K. for the event, making it his second visit to his homeland after he and his wife Meghan permanently stepped down from their roles as senior members of the royal family.
While it is possible that Kate Middleton will be at the event, Meghan Markle’s appearance at the royal event has been ruled out.
Which Duchess Will Make An Appearance At Princess Diana’s Statue Unveiling?
We’ve learned that Meghan Markle will not be attending the event and will stay at home in California with her two young children. Multiple outlets have reported that the 39-year-old Duchess won’t be taking the 10-plus hour flight to London just weeks after welcoming baby Lilibet on June 4, 2020.
“Meghan has just had a baby and has no plans to travel to London for the memorial event planned for the statue unveiling,” a source told Entertainment Tonight.
Kate Middleton has been reported to be making plans to attend the unveiling alongside her husband. With Kate and William’s official residence at Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A, the Duchess of Cambridge will likely make the short trip to the palace’s Sunken Gardens, and be present during the memorial event.
“The Duchess has seen this project evolve from its conception and now to the finished article and undoubtedly wants to be there to support her husband,” a royal source told The Mirror. “No doubt there will be tensions between the Cambridges and Harry, but they all recognize that despite the obvious and deep rooted issues between them, they want the day to be solely about the Princess of Wales’s enduring legacy.”
Prince William And Harry’s Reunion For The Unveiling
On July 1, the two princes will walk alongside each other to honor their mother’s memory.
Harry, Kate, and William previously reunited for Prince Philip’s funeral in April, just a few weeks after Harry and wife Meghan made some shocking accusations against the royal family.
A source close to Harry told Harper’s Bazaar after the trip that the family did not achieve peace during the visit, even though Prince William and Harry talked amicably. Apparently, the issues Meghan and Harry raised during their Oprah tell-all interview were not resolved.

“This trip was to honor the life of his grandfather and support his grandmother and relatives,” the source said at the time. “It was very much a family-focused period of time. Saturday broke the ice for future conversations but outstanding issues have not been addressed at any great length. The family simply put their issues to one side to focus on what mattered.”
The brothers will give their own speeches at the event, and ahead of the upcoming memorial, a source told The Sun that “There have not been any personal chats or proper talks, just a very brief and minimal exchange of text messages. The relationship is still very much strained.”
