Kate Middleton revealed that she “had her heart set” on a different name for her firstborn, who she lovingly refers to her as her “little grape” while pregnant with him. She had the name Alexander in mind. Of course, Alexander wasn’t thrown out completely. It became George’s middle name, followed by his second middle name, Louis.
“Courtiers insisted the pair had not found out the sex of their unborn baby, and friends close to the couple claim William wanted a surprise,” royal reporter Katie Nicholl wrote in the recently surfaced Vanity Fair report. “Although Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had set her heart on the name Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn.”
Nicholl then added that “Kate was reported to have affectionately referred to her bump as ‘our little grape’ while she was pregnant, and there was a flurry of betting on possible names.”
Kate and Prince William’s second son, Prince Louis, inherited George’s second middle name and not his first. The name Louis does have more intimate ties to the royal family than previously assumed. He’s named after Prince Philip’s late uncle Louis Mountbatten and is also one of Prince William’s middle names.
Alexander is not without royal tradition. It’s the male version of Queen Elizabeth’s first middle name, Alexandra. There are also several Scottish royals who have the same name.
In case you’re wondering, Prince George’s full name is “His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.”
