A vehicle in the motorcade transporting Kate Middleton and Prince William on Monday, June 17, struck an elderly pedestrian. The Duke of Cambridge and Duchess of Cambridge were traveling to the Order of the Garter service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Information from Scotland Yard reveals that the collision involved a marked police motorcycle traveling on Upper Richmond Road in south west London. The woman, identified as 83-year old Irene Mayer, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Irene is currently listed in serious but stable condition.
An IOPC investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct stated, “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision involving a marked police motorcycle attached to the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command and a woman pedestrian on Upper Richmond Road, Richmond, south west London at 12:50 p.m. on Monday 17 June.”
Independent Office for Police Conduct investigators reportedly will continue to speak to local residents and view CCTV from the scene to determine how the incident involving Irene Mayer took place. At this time there are no reports of any injuries sustained by the motorcycle driver or any other pedestrians.
It is thought that Prince William and Kate Middleton have sent flowers, asked to be kept updated and be allowed to visit when Irene Mayer’s condition improves. It is not known when the Duke of Cambridge and Duchess of Cambridge received news of the motorcycle collision.
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were deeply concerned and saddened to hear about the accident on Monday afternoon. Their Royal Highnesses have sent their best wishes to Irene and her family and will say in touch throughout every stage of her recovery,” according to Kensington Palace.

The Duke of Cambridge is a Knight of the Garter. William’s investiture took place in 2008. Kate Middleton attended, accompanied by Prince Harry.
The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Prince William are all Knights of the Garter. Prince Harry has not yet been invested as a Knight of the Garter. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attendance was not required at the service.
The Order of the Garter one of the most prestigious orders one can receive for extraordinary public service. The only orders that bear higher prestige are the Victoria Cross and the George Cross.
