An eyewitness by the name @melissagrflx immediately took to Instagram to share a short footage she managed to film of the bizarre but exciting scenario. The video shows Kate Middleton, wearing a beige blazer, behind the wheel of her Range Rover on the way inside the royal gates. The 36-year-old duchess seemed to be in happy spirits as she drove by, and even managed to give tourists a curt wave before entering the palace.
“We went there without knowing that anything special would happen that day. There were many people waiting for the change of guards when she came to the Palace,” an eyewitness told E! News. “I really didn’t expect to see her. There was no warning, just in general a lot of police. It was a short but exciting moment.”

The Royal Family has not commented as to why the Duchess of Cambridge’s seemingly unofficial visit to the Queen’s official residence on Wednesday. Some fans are suggesting that she may be meeting the Queen for a laid-back afternoon tea or some private engagement. According to Harper’s Bazaar, Duchess Kate went there for a swim.
Royal insiders told the magazine that there’s an ultra-private pool inside the Buckingham Palace where all royal children have learned to swim. Reportedly, it’s also where Prince George, Charlotte, and Louis took their first dip. Sources claim that Kate also uses the pool occasionally.
“It’s rather no frills but it’s a safe, private spot and many of the adult family members — and even senior members of staff — like to go there too,” the source stated. “Kate regularly visits the palace, with and without the children, for this very reason.”
Whatever the reason for her surprise visit was, Kate’s solo outing on Wednesday proved that she’s truly a strong, independent woman! While members of the royal family have been spotted driving themselves before, this is a rare sighting for a female. Most royals who have been photographed behind the wheel are males, such as Prince William and Prince Harry.
