Kate Middleton Wears Queen’s Pearls During Mourning Procession

To honor the Queen on Wednesday, September 14, the female members of the Royal Family all wore pearls in some way or another. It is known that the Queen had a special preference for pearls.

In some way or another, the female royals incorporated pearls in their mourning attire: Queen Consort Camilla wore a triple strand of pearl necklace, Meghan Markle wore pearl earrings which she received from Her Majesty as a gift, and Princess Kate wore a beautiful pearl brooch that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth herself.

Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Hall with her mother-in-law, Camilla, following Queen Elizabeth’s passing on September 8.

The pearl, won by the new Princess of Wales, features three large pearls at the center of a diamond leaf.

It’s been a longstanding tradition for royal women to wear pearls to the funeral of another member of the Royal Family. The tradition can be traced back to the time of Queen Victoria, who dressed in black clothes decorated with pearls for forty years following the death of her husband Prince Albert.

For this reason, pearls have been come to be seen as “mourning jewelry” for members of the Royal Family.

In 2021, the Princess of Wales wore a pearl necklace to attend the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April last year at the age of 99.

According to a report by Metro, Kate Middleton also paid a subtle tribute to the late Princess of Wales by wearing a pair of Diana’s diamond earrings that Wednesday. It’s to be expected as Kate Middleton has now become the first Princess of Wales since Diana following the Queen’s death.
