The royal family website explains that Kate and Burton collaborated on the eventual design: “The dress epitomises timeless British craftsmanship by drawing together talented and skilled workmanship from across the United Kingdom.”

The dress was a vision of understated, simple, elegance. The Royal School of Needlework created the lace for the dress out of English Cluny and French Chantilly lace, using the Irish Carrickmacross technique. Kate’s dress incorporates four lace flowers: roses, thistles, daffodils, and shamrocks.

Each flower represents a UK country: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, respectively.

While working with the lace, the Royal School of Needlework embroiderers washed their hands every thirty minutes in order to keep the lace and threads clean and the needles were replaced every three hours to keep them sharp.

In interviews with BBC News, embroiderer Anne Butcher stated that working on Kate’s dress was a “once in a lifetime chance.”

The same team embroidered Kate’s veil and shoes. Embroiderer Chloe Savage told People in 2021 and provided some personal insight on the process of making it.

Savage said the last fitting was the morning before Kate and Williams’s wedding then everyone “went to the pub for a drink!” Later Savage was able to share her special moment with her daughter and friends as they watched the wedding on tv.

As a nod to her beautiful dress, in 2023 the same four flowers were used in Kate and Princess Charlotte’s matching Alexander McQueen dresses for King Charles III’s coronation.
