King Charles Appoints His Younger Siblings As Stand-ins

King Charles surprised many when he proposed that, instead of stripping Prince Harry and Prince Andrew of their role as counselors of state, he’d add two more names to the list so that there’ll be no occasion that’ll require Harry or Andrew ever needing to step in.

This was surprising because, prior to ascending as the monarch, it was rumored that Charles’ legacy will be a slimmed-down royal family. So far, apart from not updating the titles of the Sussexes’ children and demoting Andrew to the bottom of the list, we’re yet to see solid cutoffs of, at the very least, non-working royals.

King Charles – Seeks To Increase the Number Of Royals Who Can Stand In For A Monarch For Official Duties

King Charles has reportedly begun the process of increasing the number of royals that can serve as counselors of state, whenever he’s not able to. He wants his only sister Princess Anne and youngest brother Prince Edward to be added to the list.

At present, the counselors of state include Queen Consort Camilla and and four other senior royals.

However, two of those senior royals are no longer “working royals”; one was forced to step down due to a sexual assault scandal and the other chose to pursue a different path of “service”.

Counsellors are needed to deputise whenever the monarch is unfit to carry out his duties or is abroad.

This Monday, the King’s formal request for the change – listing Princess Anne, the Princess Royal and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, as extra substitutes – was read to the House of Lords.

By the time Tuesday was over, the Counsellors of State Bill – the legislation to make it possible – was already introduced.

The reason this was done within a very short time was to prevent any awkward situation where Andrew, who is the least liked royal, and Harry, another non-popular royal, would be called on to undertake any official duties.

The Reason King Charles Is Widening the List Of Counsellors of State

On Monday, the King’s statement – read by Lord Parker of Minsmere – said that the reason the King wants to expand the list is to have eligible people that’ll step in for him whenever he’s not available.

The statement said that adding the extra counsellors would “ensure continued efficiency of public business when I’m unavailable, such as while I’m undertaking official duties overseas”.
