King Charles Faces Explosive Faith Backlash – Did He Betray His Coronation Oath?

A former royal chaplain is challenging King Charles’ multi-faith approach, raising provocative questions about his Coronation oath and his role as head of the Church of England.

King Charles Faces Explosive Faith Backlash – Did He Betray His Coronation Oath?King Charles’ allegiance has come under serious question a few times since he was crowned in 2023.

Sometimes it is the fans finding it weird that the King would ignore acknowledging a Christian holiday in favor of a non-Christian one.

Other times it is Christian religious leaders expressing their disappointment in some of the King’s decisions.

But if you can recall, Charles was famously crowned in the presence of several religious leaders representing each of Britain’s most practiced religions.

From the get go, Charles signaled that his era will be one of religious unity. But, at the end of the day, his role will always be that of the “Head of the Church of England.” And a former royal chaplain doesn’t quite understand why he isn’t upholding this role first.

Key Takeaways

  • King Charles is facing criticism over his approach to Britain’s increasingly multi-faith society.
  • Former royal chaplain Gavin Ashenden claims Charles has “deserted Christian allegiance.”
  • Critics are questioning whether the King is putting religious inclusivity ahead of his traditional Church of England responsibilities.
  • Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally has defended Charles, praising his Christian faith and support for the Church.

King Charles Accused of Abandoning His “Christian Allegiance”

According to GB News, King Charles tweaked his traditional title in time for this year’s Sovereign Grant Annual Report. Now it’s no longer just “Defender of the Faith,” it’s “Protector of the Space for Faith within the Multi-faith Nation.”

Whatever this new title change means, certain members of the Christian community in the UK aren’t exactly excited about it.

One of the people challenging the King’s new approach is former royal chaplain Gavin Ashenden.

Challenging Charles’ alarming changes to the Monarchy’s operations, Ashenden, who served as a royal chaplain for nearly a decade, complained that the Monarch “has deserted Christian allegiance, turned his back on his Coronation oath.”

He added, “Some are asking whether his behaviour is sufficiently subversive as to raise questions about his capacity to fulfil the office of King.”

However, the new archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, was filled with nothing but sweet praise for King Charles.

In a statement issued earlier this year, she expressed public gratitude for the monarch, thanking him for his “deep Christian faith, demonstrated in his life of service to our nation and the Commonwealth.”

She also described him as a “great supporter of the Church of England.”
