The title of the book, “Spare,” alludes to an age-old aristocratic saying that emphasizes the necessity of having both an heir and a spare to safeguard the family legacy.

In the event of the heir’s untimely demise, there is a “spare heir” which ensures the family’s wealth stays in the family and won’t go to an outsider.

In this context, Harry was once considered the spare to Prince William, the future King of England but when William married Kate and they had children, things changed.
