This week, King Charles arrived in the Bahamas to kick off his tour of the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda, and he curiously arrived without Queen Camilla.
King Charles has been enjoying his Caribbean tour without Queen Camilla, but could her well-known dislike of flying help explain why she joined him later?
Key Takeaways
- King Charles began his Caribbean tour without Queen Camilla
- The monarch enjoyed Bahamian music and cultural celebrations
- Camilla’s previously reported fear of flying has attracted attention
- Buckingham Palace planned for the Queen to join Charles later
- The royal couple will attend the Commonwealth summit in Antigua and Barbuda
So far, everything has been going well. The monarch has enjoyed traditional Bahamian music and dancing during celebrations honoring the country’s culture and creativity.
He’s gotten to meet local residents, talk to the country’s leaders, and take part in a number of meaningful events. So why wasn’t Queen Camilla in the picture?
The Express has suggested one possible explanation.
Queen Camilla’s Nervousness Over Flying Blamed Following Her Absence From Royal Tour
King Charles is killing it over in the Bahamas, but who knows if he could have maximized that impact if he’d been accompanied by his Queen?
However, when he set off for the nine-day tour covering the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda, he initially went solo.
There was no Queen Camilla accompanying him during the first two stops, although Buckingham Palace had already confirmed their separate travel arrangements.
The Express has pointed to a 2018 revelation as a possible explanation for Camilla’s absence.
You see, back then, reports highlighted the Queen’s dislike of flying, something that has occasionally made royal travel challenging for her.
However, due to her role as a senior working royal, she has sometimes had to overcome that fear.
A Palace spokesperson previously acknowledged Camilla’s nervousness about flying, although there has been no official confirmation that this was the reason for her separate travel arrangements on this particular tour.
Of course, Queen Camilla’s royal duties frequently require international travel, so it’s not as though she can avoid flying altogether!
Queen Camilla Will Join King Charles In Antigua And Barbuda
Just because she hasn’t appeared alongside Charles during the earlier stops doesn’t mean we won’t see her at all.
Camilla is scheduled to join him in Antigua and Barbuda for the final leg of the trip.
She will accompany him to the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which takes place from November 1 to 4.
The summit will bring together Commonwealth leaders to discuss important issues, with slavery reparations expected to be among the subjects attracting attention.
According to the official royal tour programme, Charles and Camilla will also participate in engagements celebrating Antigua and Barbuda’s culture, heritage, and communities.
So while Camilla may have missed some of the festivities in the Bahamas, she’ll still have plenty of opportunities to join her husband in the spotlight!
Annemarie’s Take
I have to say, Charles certainly seems to be enjoying himself on this tour! It’s always nice to see the King relaxing a little and embracing the local celebrations.
As for Camilla, if her dislike of flying played a part in the arrangements, I can certainly understand that. But since the Palace planned their separate itineraries in advance, I don’t think there’s any great mystery here.
I’m looking forward to seeing them together in Antigua and Barbuda. What do you think? Would you have preferred to see Camilla accompany Charles throughout the entire tour?
