The occasion is the 2020 Girl Up Leadership Summit which will get underway next week. The virtual event is a much-anticipated occasion and there are several other VIPs who will speak.
Meghan has spoken out often about her intent to improve the world and this is a step in the right direction. The cause of gender equality is a topic of great interest to her and her participation will be looked forward to by the girls no doubt.
Gender Equality Is A Cause Important To Meghan Markle
Who else will be lending their voices to the big event? Meghan’s co-participants include Michelle Obama, Priyanka Chopra, Sheryl Sandberg the COO of Facebook, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad.
The Girl Up organization made a splashy announcement to bring attention to Meghan’s participation. The event is scheduled for over three days and Markle will be in attendance on one of those days. The group tweeted, “The present is female! But don’t take our word for it. Hear Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex’s advice for global girls leaders when she takes the stage at the 2020 @GirlUp Leadership Summit.” What exactly is the Girl Up organization and what do they do?
The Girl Up group represents a leadership initiative that according to them, “impacted 65,000 girls through 3,500 Clubs in nearly 120 countries and all 50 U.S. states.”
It offers development programs and their website states, “We’re inspiring a generation of girls to be a force for gender equality and social change.”
Girl Up Is A Forward-Looking Female Empowerment Organization
This event is Meghan’s first formal speaking engagement since she and husband Prince Harry departed the UK for a life of freedom away from the royal family.
Meghan and Harry have been seen in informal videos in which they have spoken of their passion to change the world. Many have criticized the pair for saying things that are critical of the public and his family, in particular Harry’s comments about the Commonwealth which surfaced this week. The pair stepped back from their royal duties in January and are now living in California with their young son Archie who has just celebrated his first birthday.
I hope she tries to inspire and not lecture and blame and shame the girls.
