Royal family observers have clashed over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s claims of a nearly catastrophic car crash in New York City. For instance, some expressed heartbreak and horror over the situation.
But others questioned if the Duchess and Duke of Sussex exploited the situation to remain in the spotlight. And some pointed out that Meghan and Harry seem unreasonable in wanting fame while also seeking constant privacy.
Find out about the differing views on Meghan’s and Harry’s supposedly dangerous clash with the paparazzi. And learn what a New York City publicist claims. Get all the royal details below.
Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Invite Press, Then Avoid Pics
A New York City publicist to the stars feels that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle set up unrealistic expectations by inviting press to an event and then trying to avoid photos.
As a result, the publicist, Rob Shuter, claims Meghan and Harry set up the situation that resulted in a paparazzi car chase. And Shuter, publicist for stars including Jennifer Lopez, P. Diddy and Princess Michael of Kent, pointed out to the NY Post that it made no sense for Meghan and Harry to urge press to attend the Women of Vision Awards event, then exit through the back to avoid photos.
And the situation makes it appear that the Duchess and Duke of Sussex want both privacy and publicity at the same time. But “the photographers wanted to get the photos that they came out to get. Going out and letting them take pictures of you outside the venue is part of being a celebrity,” noted Shuter. However, Harry, 38, and Markle, 41, slipped away from the event at the Ziegfeld Theater in Midtown with Meghan’s mother.
Because they could not get any photos, the paparazzi followed them. But a representative for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex described them as “involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.”
Police Describe Much Less Drama In Royal Car Ride
But law enforcement insiders disagreed with that description. And sources claimed that the chase lasted about an hour. The trio changed to a cab to avoid the paparazzi. And both a private security car and an NYPD vehicle followed them along with the media. However, the New York Police Department reported no 911 calls or reports of collisions related to Prince Harry and Meghan.
And the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly wanted to go to their private Upper East Side residence without revealing the address. But Shuter called it “unrealistic for them to try and hide where they were temporarily staying. It’s not like they even live there. And the press would never report the address of where they’re staying.”
The publicist also revealed that the media know where “stars like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift stay while in New York. New York is the biggest media capital in the world. It’s not reasonable to think you should run away from the press,” he added. “It’s a weird battle for them to be fighting.”
