And the eager-to-succeed young woman headed to Northwestern University to achieve her goals. Meghan became successful even as a student, gradually making her way in the competitive entertainment world.

Meghan Markle Reflects On Ambition In Her First Podcast

The Duchess of Sussex took a risk in deciding to voice her views in a podcast, titled Archetypes. But Meghan got a very special person to support her for her podcast debut: Her friend Serena Williams. And in their far-ranging conversation, they talked about what the term ambition means, noted Cosmo

For most of her life, Markle believed that feeling ambitious played a key role in succeeding in the world. But as she shared with Serena in her podcast, that belief changed dramatically when Meghan met Harry. “I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ‘ambitious’ until I started dating my now husband,” Meghan confessed.

And then Markle learned that the royal family, with the exception of Prince Harry, does not feel fond of women who appear ambitious. But the Duchess of Sussex feels that beyond the royal family, society in general disapproves of ambition in women. “And um, apparently ambition is, uh… a terrible, terrible thing, for a woman that is — according to some. So, since I’ve felt the negativity behind it, it’s really hard to un-feel it.”

Meghan Markle SLAMS Society For Holding Back Ambitious Women

As a result of her awareness, the Duchess of Sussex has become increasingly aware of women’s issues. For instance, she shared that she sees the way that society disapproves of ambitious women “in the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller — so much smaller — on a regular basis.” However, Meghan seeks to become a role model.

And she recalled appearing on Nickelodeon’s news as a child to discuss her views on sexism. When Markle noticed that P&G used the word women about dish-washing liquid, she penned a letter that persuaded the company to change the word to people. It succeeded.

And looking back, Markle feels that experience offered “an “awakening to the millions of ways, big and small, that our society tries to box women in, to hold women back, to tell women who and what they should and can be. I’ve never lost touch with that reality, and in the last few years, my desire to do something about it has grown. My 11-year-old voice has also gotten a little more confident — maybe a little louder.”
