In the episode she included snippets from several movies, including the famous quote, “I don’t think that men can control crazy women”, by philosopher Jordan Peterson.
The 41-year-old also said that she’s been called “crazy”, “hysterical”, “nuts” and “insane”, but that she particularly feels strongly about the word “crazy”.
Meghan Markle Criticizes Hollywood For Its Portrayal Of Women
Meghan Markle’s latest podcast episode, “The Decoding of Crazy with Deepika Padukone, Jenny Slate and Constance Wu”, saw the former actress explore the representation of women by popular media culture.
She said that Hollywood’s labeling of women as crazy causes real harm to real women and dismisses their various and different experiences. The movies she used as an example to prove her point were the popular US sitcoms “How I Met Your Mother” and “Scrubs”.
The fifth episode of Archetypes actually started off with a trigger warning for those who can’t stand its heavy topics. After the lines from the movies played out, the Duchess said that it’s not wise to call someone “crazy” or “hysterical” because it “completely dismisses their experience and minimises what they’re feeling.”
“It keeps going to the point where anyone who’s been labelled it enough times can be gaslit into thinking that they’re actually unwell or sometimes worse, to the point where real issues of all kinds get ignored. Well that’s not happening today.”
The new release featured Indian actress Deepika Padukone, American comedian Jenny Slate, and American actress Constance Wu, who revealed she had wanted to take her own life at one point.
Additional features include comedian Aparna Nancherla and the former Surgeon General of California, Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris.
Together, they discussed the insidious ways the word “crazy” has been used to dismiss the credibility of women. The conversation was in depth and vulnerable, with Constance Wu revealing that she felt so bad after surviving a severe suicidal thoughts phase.
