Meghan Markle Wins Prize As ‘Feminist And Global Role Model’

Famous as a feminist and “founding mother” of the Ms. Foundation, Gloria Steinem will give Meghan Markle the 2023 Women of Vision award in May. And the award from the Ms.

Foundation recognizes the Duchess of Sussex for her “global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls.” However, the organization, based in Brooklyn, also praised Meghan as a “feminist, champion of human rights and gender equity and global role model,” reported Page Six

Markle will travel from her California mansion to New York City for the May 16 ceremony. And the Ms. Foundation, which seeks “to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of color and low-income women who are living in poverty,” gushed over the Duchess of Sussex’s contributions. “We are thrilled to announce this year’s honorees for the Women of Vision Awards and to celebrate 50 years of progress and power,” said Teresa C. Younger, president, and CEO of the Ms. Foundation.

Younger noted that Meghan and other winners of the award stand out as “incredible leaders. And we are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work,” added Younger. The foundation CEO shared that the award winners work “on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world.”

Markle joins award winners such as Wanda Irving, the co-founder of Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project; Kimberly Inez McGuire, the executive director of URGE; and LaTosha Brown, political strategist and co-founder of Black Voters Matter. “Meghan, LaTosha, Wanda, Kimberly, Olivia, and Rebekah are incredible leaders,” praised Younger. “And we are grateful to be able to shine a light on their many accomplishments and tireless work on behalf of gender and racial equity across the country and the world.”

Meghan Markle Contacted Gloria Steinem To Team Up

As a result of the quarantine, Meghan and Gloria Steinem united. The Duchess of Sussex and famous feminist both reside in Montecito, California. And Markle made the first move by contacting Gloria, 89, to ask about teaming up for a political project. Meghan planned to make calls of appreciation to voting registration organizers.

And Steinem has defended Markle in interviews. For instance, the proud feminist shared, “I’m not an expert on the media. But it seems to me that she is different from the picture of her in the media.” And Steinem praised Meghan as “smart and funny and devoted to social issues.”

However, Markle may face schedule challenges. Because the award ceremony occurs just 10 days after King Charles’ coronation on May 6, Meghan could face travel conflicts. However, she and Prince Harry did not yet reveal if they plan to travel 5,459 miles from their Montecito, Calif. home to London.
