Omid Scobie is making it pretty clear that sometimes you just have to speak up – but while using the right voice, of course. The royal expert has gone on the record to slam the royal family for supposedly having a “dignified silence” but at the same time using their royal sources to really tell the world what they are thinking about when it comes to Prince Harry. Here’s what you need to know.
Omid Scobie Slams The Royals For Their ‘Dignified’ Silence
In his new column for Yahoo, the royal correspondent said, “While it may be true that Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have chosen not to answer requests for comment from journalists (including myself) about the revelations in Spare, in my experience of royal reporting the reality of the institution’s silence might not be quite what it seems. Despite the tired ‘never complain, never explain’ facade, an assortment of Royal Family sources and friends have all been busy speaking to media outlets since the contents of the book first leaked to British newspapers ahead of its 10 January debut.”
Omid also said, “It reminds me of how the Royal Family ignored Princess Diana’s cries for help after the breakdown of her marriage. That stiff upper lip in public may have briefly lived up to their brand of keeping calm and carrying on, but the long term outcome of their cruel silence still haunts them to this day. Twenty years from now I have a feeling we will be saying the same thing about Spare.”
What’s Next For The Royal Family?
In Spare, Harry details how some members of his family tried to encourage him to feed the press some details about his marriage to Meghan, but he only gave a little at a time. He also made it clear that he didn’t want to see one royal correspondent at the wedding unless Murdoch himself was going to apologize for his phone hacking scandal.
He wrote, “I’d had it with the Royal Rota, both the individuals and the system, which was more outdated than the horse and cart. It had been devised some forty years earlier, to give British print and broadcast reporters first crack at the Royal Family, and it stank to high heaven. It discouraged fair competition, engendered cronyism, encouraged a small mob of hacks to feel entitled.”
Earlier in the month, the royal rota had actually dismissed some of Harry’s domestic abuse claims. Back in 2019, William visited Harry at Nottingham Cottage, where the Duke of Sussex was living at the time, according to his book, Spare. Things got off on the wrong foot when William allegedly complained to Harry about Meghan being “rude” and abrasive,” which Harry says that his brother only repeated from the narrative that he was hearing from the press. Things got pretty heated to the point that William couldn’t contain his anger.
