Steven Moffat is looking forward to adapting a book about Prince Andrew’s infamous interview, which categorically changed his life forever, into a feature film.
The 2019 BBC’s Newsnight interview has made it into pop culture as the most ridiculed and notorious interview of recent years.
Prince Andrew’s “Nuclear” Interview To Become A Feature Film
A failed interview apparently isn’t enough humiliation for a Prince, there’s got to be a movie made about it, detailing how all the little pieces came to fit together. I’ll tell you who’s definitely not excited for this project, Prince Andrew!
“Scoop”, created and written by Peter Moffat (whose series “Criminal Justice” was remade into HBO’s “The Night Of”), will tell the significant behind-the-scenes story of how the Duke of York’s interview with BBC journalist Emily Maitlis came to be. You see, Andrew thought he was salvaging his reputation when he sat down for the interview, he never expected he was actually flushing it down the drain.
The movie will be based on key chapters of a new book by former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, and will tell the story of how Newsnight officially secured the scoop, beginning with the first failed attempt to get through to the Palace through Andrew and his team. Other key elements will include the rehearsals, the interview itself, and the well-documented devastating aftermath, which was famously described as, “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.”
“What the hell did he think he was doing? Who got him to do it? Why, when the rest of the world was so appalled, did he think it had gone so well? What kind of a man is this?,” said Moffat. “In researching the film and talking to those on the inside of this extraordinary story, I got the answers to all these questions. They’re provoking, often surprising, sometimes disturbing – and I think they make for a compelling story about power and abuse and journalistic courage.”
What We Know About the Upcoming Feature Film Based On “Scoop”
The feature will be produced by The Lighthouse Film & TV, launched in 2020 by Hilary Salmon, Radford Neville and Nick Betts – the BBC team behind BAFTA, RTS and Emmy award-winning hit movies, including “Luther”, “Criminal Justice”, “House of Saddam”, “Three Girls” and “The Night Of”. The co-producer for the project is Voltage TV. Recent productions from Lighthouse include two seasons of 61st Street for AMC Networks (also written by Moffat).

The Newsnight interview explored Andrew’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Virginia Giuffre’s accusations of sexual assault, and his long-time friend Ghislaine Maxwell. Speaking on why he remained friends with Epstein even when he was released from prison, the Prince claimed he was simply “too honorable” to ditch him.
As for Giuffre’s accusations of sexual misconduct during the first time he met her at a club, he explained it wouldn’t have been possible because he was engaged with his daughters at the restaurant chain Pizza Express. He also tried to disprove the claim of a sweaty night by saying that he suffers from a “peculiar medical condition” that meant he didn’t sweat.
There’s reason to believe that the interview was approved by the Queen, but shortly after the interview was aired, Prince Andrew stepped down from public life.
“Sam’s book vividly chronicles the moment to moment drama that led to that most revealing and jaw-dropping of TV events. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Sam’s story to life,” said Salmon.
The author of “Scoop”, McAllister added: “To have a production team of the calibre of The Lighthouse and a writer like Peter Moffat making a feature film is beyond my wildest dreams. I can’t wait to see Peter and The Lighthouse bring this extraordinary story to the screen.”
