The actor says that when it comes to the present-day Prince Charles, “He is presenting a version of himself that he wants people to see.” However, The Crown Season 4 will present a much more different version of the future King of England that royal fans perhaps haven’t’ seen before, as Prince Charles’ romance with Princess Diana along with his relationship with Camilla Sands (Camilla Parker Bowles) will both take center stage.

In a new interview with Screen International, O’Connor hints that when it came to Camilla Parker Bowles and Princess Diana, he says that Prince Charles mainly felt conflicted between the dynamics at the heart and the dynamics of the royal family. He also says that despite all of their issues and Prince Charles’ illicit affair with Camilla, he did love Princess Diana.

He told the site, “We all have a set position on the dynamic between Charles and Diana. It’s been great to have the ability to either fight against that or, at times, acknowledge it and also to challenge any question of, ‘Did he ever love her?’ Personally I think he must have done. There’s a wealth of layers and richness to Charles and Diana, and I loved seeking that out.”

While there were certainly a lot of ups and downs in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, O’Connor adds that the love and support were certainly there, even if it didn’t appear that way to the public. With Camilla Parker Bowles, of course, it’s been very different. The royal couple has been married for 15 years now and despite how they initially began their relationship, their marriage has been going strong and without any of the drama, you’d expect from a royal couple in the spotlight.
