Prince George Gets Mocked For Taking Ballet Lessons, Male Dancers Rally Behind Him

Royal Family - Prince George

Prince George’s choice of curriculum is turning out to be a controversial one. Last week, the Palace revealed that the 6-year-old is taking ballet lessons as an extra-curricular activity aside from academic subjects in school. According to The Sun, the young royal will be at the dance studio once a week for a 35-minute ballet class.

Sadly, Prince George’s love for dancing has been turned into a joke by a TV host. What came after was a passionate discussion: should boys be mocked for pursuing a career in dance?

‘Good Morning America’ Anchor Pokes Fun Of Prince George

While reporting about it, GMA host Lara Spencer made fun of Prince George’s ballet lessons.

“In addition to the usual first- and second-grade things like math, science, and history, the future King of England will be putting down the Play-Doh to take on religious studies, computer programming, poetry, and ballet, among other things,” Spencer said, and paused to seemingly elicit laughs from the audience. “Prince William says Prince George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William: We’ll see how long that lasts.”

Spencer instantly criticized by parents, dancers, and netizens alike. She has since apologized countless times, both on-air and on social media. She called her remarks as “stupid and insensitive.”

Male Dancers Defend Prince George

Spencer’s blunder sparked outrage from the dance community worldwide, who used the hashtag #boysdancetoo to defend Prince George. Male dancers, including So You Think You Can Dance celebrities, shared stories on how they also felt bullied because of dancing when they were young.

On Monday this week, more than 300 dancers showed up at Times Square in front of the Good Morning America studios. Among them were famous male dancers who gave a free dance class to the crowd.

Interestingly, Prince George shares his love for dancing with his late grandmother, Princess Diana. The People’s Princess was fond of dancing and was a patron of ballet foundations when she was alive.
