How are these royals similar? Mako’s marriage is receiving disapproval from some parts of Japanese society, in part due to her plan to marry a non-royal. Her fiancé is named Kei Komuro and the couple each turn 30 this month.
Royal Family News – Harry Has A Counterpart?
They met at Tokyo’s International Christian University in 2012 and announced their engagement in 2017. Why didn’t they marry? Reports indicate that, “the nuptials were postponed following reports of a financial argument between Komuro’s mother and her ex-fiancé.”
According to CBS News, the argument centered on, “whether about $36,000 given to Komuro’s mother by her own ex was a temporary loan or a permanent gift — some of which was apparently used to pay for Komuro’s education — cast a distinctly common, even scandalous light on Japan’s staid imperial family.”
The word common seems to be something Mako and Harry have in, erm, common, based on their choice of marriage partners.
Royal Family News – Harry Married A Commoner
In Japan, unlike in the UK, females in Mako’s stratosphere automatically forfeit their royal status if they marry a commoner.
Princess Mako’s father is Crown Prince Fumihito, next in line to Japan’s Chrysanthemum throne. After the messy financial issue, “Public sentiment then turned against Komuro and his engagement to Princess Mako as Japan’s tabloid media seized on the story about his mother.”
Hmm, who does this sound like—a commoner marrying a royal who has shady and ugly family issues?

Komuro has also gotten flak for of all things his hair. It seems the handsome commoner decided to grow his hair out and when the public caught sight of his ponytail, the waves of criticism were palpable.
One other big thing Mako and Prince Harry have in common is a desire to distance themselves from family by fleeing to the US. She and Mr. Ponytail, “are expected to move to the United States — a move that many have compared to Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s move to California after they largely cut ties with the U.K. royal family.” Wonder if they’ll be neighbors?
