Apartment 1—previously occupied by the Queen’s cousin Duke of Gloucester, Richard—has undergone a $1.84 million restoration to be the marital home for the recently married Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Prince Richard and his three children offered to vacate the place when Prince Harry got engaged to the former “Suits” star in November. The 21-bedroom mansion is just adjacent to the Apartment 1A, Prince William and Princess Kate’s home at the Palace.

Since their engagement, Prince Harry and Meghan have lived at the two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage. It has been Prince Harry’s home since 2013, and it was also where he proposed and got engaged to Meghan in 2017.

They also reportedly bought a luxury real estate in Oxfordshire at The Cotswolds, which would remain as their escape from the busy city, according to Metro. The country bolthole is just over one hour travel from London, making it easily accessible to the couple.

The mansion’s renovation included roof and windows repair, along with various updates. According to Vogue, the Duchess of Sussex would likely put her own touch to the interior design of the apartment. Meghan likes candles and a cozy ambiance. Because she likes California-cool décor style, perhaps it’s going to be a “Los Angeles meets London” design mash-up, the magazine says.

Prince William and Kate’s Apartment 1A also underwent renovation before they moved in in 2013.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share the Kensington Palace with 13 other royals, with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank being the latest ones to move in. They are now living at the Ivy Cottage, just next door to the Nottingham Cottage, ahead of their wedding on October 12. Princess Eugenie is the cousin of Prince Harry and Prince William.

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, another cousins of the Queen, are in Apartment 10. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Kent live at the Wren House and the Queen lives 2 miles away at the Buckingham Palace with her husband Prince Philip.
